Better late than never

DIY Electric Car

I converted my 1992 Toyota pickup to all electric on Sept 2011. I have driven it to work and back 40 miles every day for the past 6 months. I have put over 6000 EV miles on it now. I have continuously been making efficiency tweaks to it. Check out the improvements: Initially 118Amp draw at 50mph. Added low rolling resistance tires, replaced wheel bearings, added aero mods, reduced extra weight by 150lbs.

More gets done every day

DIY Electric Car

God bless Rich Pin he has put on You tube video on everything you need to do to remove to get the engine out of a Saturn SL1. I would be lost without him. I have a Haynes manual but it like gobbledegook! So I just do what old Rich Pin say to do this. I have now removed the alternator and the starter motor. All the wire hareness is clear and just because I was in the mood I removed the exhaust.I also removed the intake manifold.

Little and often

DIY Electric Car

Hi, I found out where the battery tray bolt was, in the wheel arc? So I removed that, the serpentine belt and AC unit. Also I scrouged from work some baby 12V sealed rechargable batteries which were going to be recycled. but still have some charge. I think I will be able to use them to test the system some way. I am now reading up on building my own desulfator just for fun.

Hi, today I managed to get some time on the Saturn EV. I removed the bonnet, radiator, the air box and the battery. Got stock on the battery box but at least I can see where I am going now. Won't be long untill I yank out that ugly big engine lump. Oh I also found out I have a leak in the boot which I will need to sort out before I put in any batteries etc.

What are you waiting for?

DIY Electric Car

OK I posted a excited start but so far have not even touched the car? No real excuse except I have two other cars to fix at the moment. Had to replace the lower control arm on my Volvo V70xc. What a pain that is? Also have to replace outer tie rod end on my Volvo XC90. However I have been busy buying parts and I building myslef a lab power supply for a old computer ATX power supply which I had lying around.

Arc 1 Conversion Journal 3/3/2012

DIY Electric Car

It has been about 5 months since I posted my first blog about converting my car to electricity. My professional life has kept me busy, but I still have made good progress on my conversion. Winter 2011-2012: Engine Bay and Under-car: The car is now completely gas-less. No engine, no fuel tank, no alternator, pumps, radiators, exhaust pipes, or muffler.
