GLA AMG interior

One new feature which makes a substantial contribution to the driving experience of the AMG GLA is the inclusion of 4matic+ four-wheel drive. This provides torque control across the rear axle to help with cornering and acceleration.

Other unique additions to the performance crossover include the use of a McPherson strut design on the front axle which improves handling and body roll, while a 4-link rear suspension is connected to the body via a rear axle. Three different suspension control modes are also offered, ranging from comfort-focused to sporty.

This is further emphasised in the six AMG driving modes: Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Individual and Race. These modify powertrain, agility, suspension and exhaust sound specific to the mode chosen.

Styling upgrades to the AMG GLA further emphasise its sporty bent, including flared front wheel arches, rear spoiler and two round twin tailpipe. Other upgrades include AMG-specific radiator grille, LED headlights and aerodynamically optimised 19-inch alloy wheels, while the interior gets Nappa-leather steering wheel with buttons as well as racing yellow contrast-stitching on the seating.

That’s the performance model, but what about the regular model?

Everything you need to know about the GLA-Class

Mercedes-Benz has today revealed the new GLA-Class.

More than 10cm higher but also one-and-a-half centimetres shorter, with a more SUV-esque shape over the outgoing model, the GLA-Class represents the entry-level into the brand’s successful ‘G’ family of SUVs.

Mercedes GLA 2020 lead

Standing in stark contrast to the recently launched boxy GLB, the Mercedes GLA is positioned as its sporty brother and as a lifestyle-oriented SUV.

Typical design elements help to emphasise the vehicle’s off-road character including the upright front section, short overhangs at the front and rear, and protective cladding to give a more rugged appearance.

On the inside it’s business as usual, reflecting many of the recent launches from Mercedes. Instrument and infotainment displays are available in a variety of configurations, including two 7in screens, one 7in and one 10.25in display and a widescreen version that features two 10.25in displays.

Mercedes GLA 2020 MBUX

Mercedes MBUX features as standard and supports both touchpad and “Hey, Mercedes” voice-activated control.

Although shorter than its predecessor on the outside, the new GLA offers a more spacious interior. This is particularly true of the rear legroom and boot space, increasing 116mm and 14 litres respectively. The rear seats can also be adjusted by 14cm and the backrest set to a steeper rake too, making room for items such as bulky boxes.

The driver also gets 22mm more head room than in the original GLA, with the seating position higher and more upright to give a more commanding view of the road.

Four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines are offered, with two options available at launch. The 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol offers 163hp and 250Nm of torque, going from 0-62mph in 8.7 seconds. The top of the line GLA 35 AMG ups the ante with 306hp, 400Nm of torque and a 5.1 second 0-62mph time.

The GLA can also be equipped with Mercedes 4matic permanent all-wheel drive system. This lets the driver adjust the balance based on the driving mode selected, with Eco and Comfort offering an 80:20 split between front and rear wheels and Comfort and Sport configured to 70:30.

In Off-road, the all-wheel drive clutch acts as an inter-axle differential lock, with the basic distribution balanced at 50:50.

4matic spec models also feature an Off-Road Engineering Package as standard. This adds an off-road headlight function and an additional off-road driving mode called Downhill Speed Regulation which automatically adheres to a preselected slow speed.

Mercedes GLA 2020 rear

”The launch of the new GLA marks the culmination of a complete renewal of our family of compact cars,”says Britta Seeger, member of the board of management of Daimler AG.

The new GLA will make its debut in Europe in the spring of 2020, with Mercedes expecting the GLA to become one of the brand’s most popular compact class models, only just behind the A-Class.
