Toyota plans to introduce 10 new hybrid models between now and 2012 in various global markets, with sales of one million gas-electric hybrids per year, worldwide, sometime early in the next decade. In April 2005, Lexus introduced the crossover RX 400h, the world’s first hybrid-powered luxury vehicle.

With the replacement of the engine’s belt-driven water pump, all engine coolant pumps are now electrically operated, reducing mechanical losses and providing engine coolant flow rate control independent of engine RPM at all times. The new regime will come into force April 6, 2011 and will see discounts on company car tax currently available for Euro 4-standard diesel cars registered before 1 January 2006, higher-emitting hybrid cars and alternative fuel company cars, such as those powered by bi-fuels, road fuel gas and bioethanol, being scrapped.

Despite this, a 2003 EPRI study , assuming only $2/gallon gas , zero buying incentives, and a PHEV premium of $3-$5,000 more than standard hybrids, shows that the total lifetime cost of ownership for a PHEV will be lower than that of any other vehicle type -- so the payback will be there.
