JRC: 76.5% of world’s population in urban areas as of 2015

The focus of the Atlas of the Human Planet 2019 is on key urbanization and human settlements figures and commented global analysis over 40 years’ time (1975 – 2015). In 2015, 76.5% Urban centers have almost doubled in number (from more than 6,900 in 1975 to more than 13,100 in 2015) and their population size has also grown.

New cars in Europe in 2013 collectively met 2015 CO2 target two years ahead of the deadline

2015 target: 130 g CO 2 /km. The average CO 2 emissions level of a new car sold in 2013 was 127 g CO 2 /km; the target for 2015 was 130 g/km. Thus, in 2013 the European Union fleet already collectively met its legal target for 2015. People in Malta, Denmark and Greece bought the lightest models on average. Source: EEA.

ICCT study finds GHGs from shipping on the rise

Overall, the study found that maritime fuel consumption increased from 291 to 298 million tonnes (+2.4%) from 2013 to 2015, compared to a 7% increase in shipping transport work. Ships registered to Panama (15%), China (11%), Liberia (9%), Marshall Islands (7%), Singapore (6%), and Malta (5%) were the largest emitters. Source: The ICCT.

In order to cut greenhouse gas emissions from transport, carmakers have a collective target for the average car sold in the EU to emit a maximum of 130g CO 2 /km by 2015 and 95g CO 2 /km by 2020. Last year the EEA reported that manufacturers had some distance to go to meet the 2015 target.
