GM sold 2,633 units of the Volt extended range electric vehicle in December, up 72.2% Nissan North America, Inc. All TMS hybrid sales in 2012 totaled 327,413 units, up 83.3%

car buyers took home about 17,500 plug-in electric cars in 2011. In 2012, about 53,000 electric cars were likely sold--essentially triple the prior year's number. We know that at least 50,000 sales of plug-in cars will have been reported by Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, Nissan, and. Last year, the numbers got better.

Last month, the 2011 Nissan Leaf took the lead in the U.S. electric vehicle sales wars from the 2011 Chevrolet Volt. Through June, Nissan sold 3,875 Leafs, despite production delays stemming from the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

The 2012 Chevrolet Volt might cost nearly $5,000 cheaper to buy than the 2012 Nissan Leaf, but over the next five years, it might cost you less to run. At least, that’s the verdict of Kelley Blue Book (KBB) which crowned the 2012 Chevy Volt the electric choice in its inaugral Total Cost of Ownership awards.
