Shanghai GM has outlined the next phase of its “Drive to Green” product strategy—launched in 2008 ( earlier post )—for 2011-2015. The joint venture between GM and SAIC intends to reduce fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions by 15% while improving performance 14% by 2015. Several targets announced in 2008 have already been achieved.

China has been GM’s largest market since 2010, last year accounting for about one-third of its global sales. Investments in GM’s quality growth will include the opening of five new manufacturing facilities by the end of 2015: four vehicle assembly plants and one powertrain plant. MPV sales will likely double to 2.8 million last year.

Created from the old GM’s strongest operations in an asset sale approved by the Federal bankruptcy court on 5 July ( earlier post ), the new GM is built on four core brands: Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC. The four brands will offer a total of 34 nameplates by 2010, compared to old GM’s total of 48 in 2008 and 63 in 2004.
