Established in 2008, it has already converted eight Lotuses, and is working on five VW Golfs. A group of EV owners can create a grid cloud, with not yet available smart chargers, the grid cloud works as a virtual powerplant. The longer term plan is to import electric cars. ECE is funded by its founders and private investors.

When IEEE Spectrum’s editor in chief, Harry Goldstein, needed to replace his 2008 Honda Fit in October 2020, he thought seriously about buying an electric vehicle. Two obstacles stood in his way. One was affordability. Even without a son soon to be entering college, the premium prices of EVs were a turnoff.
