Goodenough , one of the inventors of the lithium-ion battery, died on 25 June at age 100. He probably is best known for developing the lithium cobalt oxide cathode in 1980—which became the foundation for Sony’s first commercial lithium-ion battery in 1991. His first was lithium cobalt oxide. to 4 volts.

Way back in late 2008, it was the Chinese BYD F3DM, with a lithium-ion battery pack and a combined parallel and series hybrid powertrain inserted into the Corolla-knockoff body of the BYD F3--China's best-selling. Remember the world's very first production plug-in hybrid?

Though 12 miles is well short of the 40 plus miles of the upcoming Chevy Volt, the costs associated with the hybrid system should also fall well short of the Volts costly power train. The plug-in Prius is a separate model from the all new 2010 Prius Hybrid. The plug-in Prius is expected to launch sometime in 2010.

The easiest conversions are for 2004-2008 Prius (not 2001-2003 Prius) and the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner Hybrid. We will have similar solutions available for better (but more expensive) nickel-metal hydride or lithium-ion batteries.) They are early adopters, buying "Version 1.0" Conversions are limited to certain vehicle types.
