The upcoming plug-in Prius will use the traditional nickel metal hydride battery system, but future versions will likely see the addition of a lithium ion battery pack. The fleet models will be part of a test bed for Toyota and future development of the plug-in Prius may at some point lead to a consumer model.

The GWKulla, a short, curvy compact, runs on lithium-ion batteries and can go 160 kilometers (99 miles) when fully charged, the company says. In early testing, reviewers said a plug-in electric hybrid sedan from Chinas BYD Co. But the gasoline engine in the BYD rattled and could be noisy when it kicked in, the reviewers said.

The easiest conversions are for 2004-2008 Prius (not 2001-2003 Prius) and the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner Hybrid. We will have similar solutions available for better (but more expensive) nickel-metal hydride or lithium-ion batteries.) They are early adopters, buying "Version 1.0" Conversions are limited to certain vehicle types.

In late 2008, BYD started selling the first production PHEV in China. First Escape PHEV delivered to SCE Nov 2007; 20 in 2008-2009. Beginning in 2005, we excerpted individual statements of intentions by carmakers, but by the start of 2008, the number of comments became too numerous for us to track. Batteries not ready.

Last year Oregon had also aggressively negotiated with the Chinese carmaker, BYD , to manufacture its line of plug-in hybrids in the state for sale in the U.S.) If these companies are ultimately successful and can convince EV manufacturers to ditch lithuim ion, we could depend on the already robust recycling program. In the U.S.
