Goodenough , one of the inventors of the lithium-ion battery, died on 25 June at age 100. He probably is best known for developing the lithium cobalt oxide cathode in 1980—which became the foundation for Sony’s first commercial lithium-ion battery in 1991. His first was lithium cobalt oxide.

BYD, the China-based battery and automaker, will supply lithium-ion batteries to one of China’s top three auto groups for applications in hybrid vehicles. Chinese carmaker BYD and Volkswagen have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the options for partnership in the area of hybrids and electric vehicles powered by lithium batteries. Martin Winterkorn, and Chairman of the Board of Management of BYD, Wang Chuanfu, signed the agreement last week during a BYD visit to Volkswagen.
