It is expected that Daimler will invest a double-digit million Euro amount at the Hambach plant to produce the vehicle with a lithium-ion battery. The second generation of the vehicle accelerates from 0-60km/h in 6.5 seconds and has a maximum speed limited to 100km/h to make it suitable for the city.

The unexpected success of the vehicle has prompted the company to work on five more electric cars.

With the electrically powered smart vision EQ fortwo, smart is presenting a concept vehicle from the relatively recent product and technology brand EQ at the 2017 Frankfurt International Motor Show. More than ten new electric cars are set to go into series production at Mercedes-Benz Cars by 2022, from the smart to the large SUV.

Tesla is the only production automaker selling a highway capable electric vehicle in North America and Europe, and as such Daimler’s investment will see the company furthering its development of battery-run cars. So far, 100 smart electric cars have already been undergoing large-scale trials in London since 2007.
