In the early 2000's there was the “Euro 1” emission standard. These kinds of bans have attracted criticism from auto 'journalists' and legacy vehicle manufacturers who rely on ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) sales which are already faltering tremendously. Is their criticism warranted? Absolutely not. The answer is simple.

Athough the US has made progress in road safety—reducing crash deaths by 31% from 2000 to 2013—other high-income countries reduced crash deaths by an average of 56% during the same period. There were more than 32,000 crash deaths in the US in 2013, with more than $380 million in direct medical costs.

Emissions of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ), a seriously health-damaging pollutant, have decreased by 2% compared to the previous year and by about 12% since the year 2000. EU-27 emissions of all four pollutants were lower in 2007 than in 2006.
