Volt continues to be top-selling plug-in in US; Prius PHV #2, LEAF #3

The Chevrolet Volt was the top-selling plug-in vehicle (PEs) in the US in June 2012, posting 1,760 units, up 213.7% by volume from the 561 units in June 2011. For the first six months of the year, Volt sales reached 8,817 units, up 221.2% from 2,745 units in the first half of 2011. The Toyota Prius PHV posted 695 units, representing 3.6% of the 19,150 units of Prius family sales in June, and taking second place for PEV sales for the month.

Teijin Chemicals develops resin enabling new auto body designs

Teijin Chemicals, Ltd., the Teijin Group’s resin and plastic processing business arm, has developed Panlite AM-9937F, a material that combines dimensional precision and an ultra-smooth surface for automotive applications. Panlite AM-9937F enables product designs that were previously unachievable due to the limitations of conventional metal. The company plans to market the material for external automotive body parts and garnish, and expects to achieve annual sales of ¥10 billion (US$125 million)

ABI Research: 60% of new cars shipping globally in 2017 will feature connected car solutions

Global OEM connected car system penetration is expected to increase from 11.4% in 2012 to 60.1% in 2017, according to ABI Research. While penetration in the US and Western Europe will exceed 80% by 2017, developing regions such as Latin America and Eastern Europe will also see strong increases in telematics penetration in new vehicles, largely driven by mandates in Brazil and Russia.

ConocoPhillips announced the sanction of development of a second 4.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) production train for its Australia Pacific LNG coal seam gas (CSG) to liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Queensland, Australia. Sanctioning of the second train is the final step in the approval process for the project. From this point we are committed to the development and construction of all infrastructure and facilities to ensure the first delivery of LNG in 2015.

Pike Research: Europe to have 4.1M EV charging stations by 2020, but needs to address country-specific variations

Europe will have more than 2.9 million plug-in vehicles PEVs on its roads by 2020 with more than 4.1 million EV charging stations (electric vehicle supply equipment, EVSE) to support them, according to a new report from Pike Research, “ Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment in Europe ”. However, notes the report, the absence of a single alternating current (AC) EV charging connector standard has hampered the deployment of an EV charging infrastructure.

Boeing projects a $4.5-trillion market for 34,000 new airplanes over the next 20 years as the current world fleet doubles in size, according to the Boeing 2012 Current Market Outlook (CMO). The company’s annual forecast reflects the strength of the commercial aviation market. Airline traffic is forecasted to grow at a 5% annual rate over the next two decades, with cargo traffic projected to grow at an annual rate of 5.2%.
