The global market for light-duty (LD) natural gas vehicles (NGVs)—including passenger cars, light-duty trucks and commercial vehicles—will experience a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.2% between 2012 and 2019, reaching 3.2 million vehicles sold in 2019, according to a new forecast by Pike Research. Preliminary electric power data show that, for the first time since the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) began collecting the data, electricity generation from natural gas-fired plants is virtually equal to generation from coal-fired plants, with each fuel providing 32% of total generation. The Chevrolet Volt was the top-selling plug-in vehicle (PEs) in the US in June 2012, posting 1,760 units, up 213.7% by volume from the 561 units in June 2011. For the first six months of the year, Volt sales reached 8,817 units, up 221.2% from 2,745 units in the first half of 2011. The Toyota Prius PHV posted 695 units, representing 3.6% of the 19,150 units of Prius family sales in June, and taking second place for PEV sales for the month.

London adds 300th hybrid bus introduced to fleet

London has introduced its 300 th hybrid bus into its fleet; 1,000 hybrid buses are set to be introduced in the next four years as part of the Mayor of London Boris Johnson’s plans to improve air quality. The 300th hybrid bus is now in service on route 211 between Waterloo and Hammersmith. A further 104 hybrid buses are on order using £5 million (US$7.8 million) funding from the Department for Transport.

Ford sells 89 Focus Electrics in US in June

Ford reported selling 89 Focus Electric vehicles in the US in June, bringing the total sold year-to-date to 97 (6 in May and 2 in January). The company also reported that it has produced 763 units of the battery-electric vehicle Jan-Jun 2012. The company sold 1,265 hybrids in June—mostly the Ford Fusion hybrid (797 units), followed by the Lincoln MKZ (451).

Audi sets new first half sales record in China

Audi increased its unit sales in China and Hong Kong in the first half of the year by 37.8% to 193,871 automobiles, achieving new record results. In June, the company increased its unit sales by 20.4% year-on-year to 33,309 automobiles. This success in the first half of the year was due in particular to the models produced in Changchun, with sales of 157,441 units and growth of 38.8%.

Petrobras oil and gas output up 1.9% in May from April

Petrobras announced that its average domestic and foreign oil and natural gas output in May was 2,601,223 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boed), up 1.9% on the figure for April. Fields in Brazil produced an average 2,350,476 boed, a rise of 2% on the previous month’s output. Foreign output stood at 250,747 boed, an increase of 1.7% on April. Domestic output included 1,989,210 barrels/day of oil, up 1.4% on oil output in April.

GreenTech Automotive purchased Hong Kong-based EuAuto in 2010 and relocated the company’s operations and manufacturing to the United States. In the US, MyCar has a top-speed of 25 mph (40 km/h) due to regulatory restrictions, classifying it as a Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV).
